Assessing staff competence to administer medication (SHM-A)
CQC require care providers to have a formal system to assess the competency of staff who administer medication. This workshop will provide you with the knowledge, tools and skills to do this and is suitable for carers and nurses working in a variety of care setting.
Duration: 1 day (7hrs) Entry requirements: Attendees must have at least 2 years experience administering medication in a professional setting.
Foundation level - 'How to administer medication' (SHM-F)
A half day workshops for nurses and carers required to administer medication. This course is suitable for groups of people new to administering medication or as a refresher for groups of more experienced carers.It offers a good ‘practical’ refresher course as attendees actually administer placebo medication (inhalers, topical, oral liquids, tablets). Theory is taught separately in the form of accredited workbooks covering all minimum learning requirements, including the new CQF unit 3047. An optional workbook assessment can lead to an accredited certificate of knowledge - see assessments
Duration: 1/2 day (3.5hrs) Entry requirements: Good basic numeracy and reading skills, no previous experience required.
Managing medicines around meal times, assessing and treating pain in clients who can and cannot communicate verbally, safe management and adminstration of warfarin.

Intermediate level - Managing medicines in the community (SHM-IDom)
A half day workshops for nurses and carers working in the community, i.e. home care support workers and personal assistants.
This course develops upon a carer’s basic knowledge to provide further guidance and training to deal with some of the common medication issues faced when working in a community care setting.
Intermediate level - Managing medicines in learning disabilities (SHM-ILD)
Half day workshops for nurses and care workers who are required to manage some of the common medicines and conditions faced by clients with mild to profound learning disabilities.
This course develops upon a carer’s basic knowledge to provide further guidance and training to deal with some of the common medication issues faced when working with clients with a learning disability. Intermediate level - Managing medicines in dementia (SHM-I Dem)
Half day workshops for nurses and care workers who are required to manage some of the common medicines and behavioural issues faced when working with clients with dementia.
This course develops upon a carer’s basic knowledge to provide further guidance and training to deal with some of the common medication issues faced when working with clients with dementia. Administering buccal midazolam and rectal diazepam (SHM-ER)
A half day workshop for nurses and care workers who provide support to clients with epilepsy.
This course provides training on epilepsy, when to intervene, how to administer medication and aftercare for all those with a role in supporting clients with epilepsy. Duration: 1/2 day (3.5hrs) Entry requirements: No previous experience required. Please note this workshop does not cover general administering medication training, such as administering epilepsy management drugs such as epilim. Admininistering oxygen and nebulisers (SHM-O2)
Half day workshops for nurses and care workers with a role in administering oxygen and/or nebulisers to clients with respiratory difficulties. This course provides training on the safe handling, maintenance and use of oxygen and the administering of nebulisers for those with a role in supporting clients with respiratory difficulties.
